From its beginnings as a traditional subsistence-based farming society, Sevier County has grown into a major tourist destination since the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park , which dominates the southern portion of the county. One of the very reasons for the park's creation, however, was also one of the county's first major economic engines: the lumber industry.

Establishments in what is now the national park felled large amounts of timber in the early s. Though the park effectively killed the logging industry in the late s, it spurred the development of one of the largest tourist resorts in the United States of America, as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is now the most visited national park in the country.

Sevier County now has the third largest tourism economy in Tennessee, ranking behind Nashville and Memphis , the state's two largest cities. The commercial cabin rental industry has grown tremendously in recent years. The tourism industry drives the county's economy. The following destinations are among the most lucrative for the area:. The massive development of the tourism industry in Sevier County in recent years, while blessing the county with good economic fortunes, has put a major stress on the county's roadways. In an effort to control this the county has put forth numerous projects to widen existing highways, and the cities of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg have also implemented a bus service oriented towards visitors, which ferries tourists to and from various popular destinations throughout the towns via decorated buses referred to as "trolleys.

Slavery was not common in Sevier County, although it did occur, especially at the large plantations along the French Broad River. Even before the American Civil War , Sevierville — a hotbed of abolitionist activity — was home to a relatively large community of free African-Americans. In late , a pro-secession speech delivered by Henry Foote sparked an angry response in Sevierville and was followed by a series of explosive anti-secession speeches.

The following year, pro-Union Knoxville newspaper editor Parson Brownlow gave a rousing anti-secession speech in Sevierville en route to a hideout in Wears Valley. Brownlow's audience remained gathered throughout the night after a rumor spread that Confederate forces were approaching. Sevierville, situated at a major crossroads south of Knoxville, suffered consistent harassment, looting, and confiscation of property by both Union and Confederate forces moving through the town in and Vance Newman, a Union recruiting officer living in Sevierville at the time, later recalled:.

A guard of rebel soldiers in threatened to burn my house, and the rebel soldiers so often threatened to take my life that I cannot particularize. They were always after me because of my Union sentiments. After Confederate General James Longstreet failed to retake Knoxville in the Battle of Fort Sanders , Union and Confederate forces quickly initiated a series of maneuvers to gain control of the strategic fords along the French Broad, culminating in an engagement near Hodsden's farm at Fair Garden in January Although the Union forces were victorious, they were later forced to retreat due to lack of supplies.

A state of general anarchy ensued that continued until the end of the war. The robbers have come at last, they robbed my husband of his pocketbook, money and papers and pocket knife. Times get worse everyday. We know not what will come next.

I feel this morning like nothing but destruction awaits us. At the war's end, most of the county's few remaining Confederate sympathizers, most notably members of the Brabson family, were forced to flee. Sevierville recovered quickly from the war, with a number of new houses and businesses being built in the s. Two members of the town's African-American community — house builder Lewis Buckner — and brickmason Isaac Dockery — — played a prominent role in Sevierville's post-war construction boom.

Buckner designed a number of houses in the Sevierville area over a year period, 15 of which are still standing. By the s, Sevierville was growing rapidly, as was the population of Sevier County. In , the town had four general stores, two groceries, a jeweler, a sawmill, and two hotels.

In , a vigilante group known as the "Whitecaps" was formed to rid Sevier County of vice. The group wore white hoods to conceal their identities and used Ku Klux Klan -like tactics, although they were not considered a racist entity.

The Whitecaps initially threatened women accused of prostitution, and the group began launching nightly attacks in the mids. In , Sevierville physician J.

Henderson took over an anti-Whitecap group, which he renamed the "Blue Bills. In , the Whitecaps' murder of a young Sevierville couple led to widespread outrage, and in , the Tennessee State Legislature banned "extra-legal conspiracies" and vigilante groups. Due to this measure and the efforts of Sevier County Deputy Sheriff Thomas Davis, the Whitecaps largely vanished by the end of the century.

After a fire destroyed much of the downtown area in , businesses shifted from the old town square at Main Street to the new Sevierville Commercial District, viz. Court Avenue and Bruce Street, which centered on the new courthouse. In , Indiana entrepreneur William J. Oliver finished work on the Knoxville, Sevierville and Eastern Railroad, which was Sevier County's first standard gauge rail line.

Situated in an area where the Foothills of the Great Smokies give way to the Tennessee Valley , Sevierville has long acted as a nexus between Knoxville to the north and the Appalachian towns in the mountains to the south.

Most times people will see a crime occurring far away from where they live and be comforted that they are not associated with the affected area. New Mexico is known quite well as a crime-ridden state, existing as perhaps one of the worst in America.

Where other states might boast dangerous cities to live, New Mexico is by far and large able to match up without hesitation and with little effort. Its top ten most dangerous cities are easily more dangerous than many other crime-infested cities in the country.

It is considered to be one of the top five most violent cities in New Mexico.

Unlike its neighboring cities, Las Vegas has seen its crime rates go down in the recent past, as the violent crimes have been reduced by around 28 percent, while the property crimes have declined close to 38 percent. Las Vegas residents had a 1 in 90 chance of being made the victim of a violent crime in past years. As of now it is a 1 in chance. I was feeling lonely back in my hometown because most of my friends had started romantic relationships while I was abroad. We both decided to download Tinder and see what happened. Without the app we may have never met and embarked on this wild, wonderful journey. Thank you for bringing us and so many other couples together around the world. I will forever be grateful. Thanks to Tinder I have found the love of my life and we are to be married.

After going on a few dates and having a few fun nights I came across Miranda. We are both Christians who fell madly in love. I honestly had been on many Tinder dates and was absolutely sure I was meeting a fling to get a free meal and have some fun…3 years and sooo many dates and memories later, I am married to my Tinder guy, Kenny! Five minutes into our first conversation, my now-wife mentioned how we would have an amazing wedding. After about a week of talking, we decided to meet up at a local bar for drinks We were at a crossroads and so after a few months of casually dating, we decided to end things.

I was in love, but thought this love story wasn't meant to last. Fast forward 9 months, and we had become inseparable.

From there we never stopped talking, dating each other and falling deeper in love. For all the single people out there, especially introverted ones like us: do not be afraid to travel outside of your comfort zone.

Tinder brought us together and for that, I am forever grateful. I was also adamant the next man I'd be with and commit to, would be the man I'd spend the rest of my life with just not married. I was very fussy and didn't expect to meet a man on Tinder. I decided to sign up anyways and just match away and see what happened. My college roommate and I both would stay up on Tinder, not looking for anything serious also not looking for hookups though, just entertainment.

My now husband and I matched on Tinder. I didn't think anything would ever come about from it, but one day I saw this stunning beauty come across the app. I Super Liked her, paying a dollar extra for the Super Like! I had just gotten out of a relationship, and Annie had just started dating women so we were both nervous and treading lightly for a little bit! We both fell hard and fast and knew we had found our person fairly quickly.
